Leadership Convening Raises Over $1.2M for Latinx Communities

HIP Increases Resources to Fuel Collective Latinx Power

Miami, FL -- This June, Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) celebrated a combined commitment of $1.2M over the course of a three-day convening to build, fund, and fuel Latinx power. The network of Latinx leaders that gathered in Miami, FL illustrated opportunities to center their communities through cross-sector collaborations that aim to achieve equity and justice. 

The over 700 attendees engaged through in-person and virtual conversations. The intersectional discussions were focused on environmental justice, wealth building, civic engagement, gender equity, narrative change, health, and identity. From those, HIP is proud to announce the following intersections of impact. 

Investments in Miami Startup Ecosystem

The Inicio Ventures Pitch Awards: Miami Magic edition, celebrated a successful event showcasing Latinx startup leaders based in Southern Florida that competed for non-dilutive cash awards. The Storybook app that combines bedtime stories with infant massage to improve sleep in babies and children swept the first and audience choice prizes, taking home a total of $15,000. Other participating Latinx-led startups included Redress, ConnectUs, Vitruvian, and Lazo.

Grants for Nonprofits Supporting Mexican Diaspora

HIP, Welcome Tech, and the Instituto de Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME) celebrated a commitment to grant $500,000 to nonprofit organizations supporting the Mexican diaspora and other Latinx families in the United States. This partnership brought a philanthropic first for HIP with the launch of this donor-directed giving fund. 

Racial Equity Grants for Power Building & Justice in South and Southwest

Commitments from the Hispanic Federation (HF) and the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation (WRF) brought resources aimed at expanding the protections of civil and social rights of Latinxs and people of color experiencing increased discrimination in the South and Southwest. During the conference, HF announced $500,000 specifically for organizations based in Florida and the WRF affirmed $200,000 for organizations specifically based in Arkansas.

Increased Research of Latinx Communities with Everytown for Gun Safety

In partnership with Everytown for Gun Safety, HIP will conduct a series of listening sessions with community members, local partner organizations, and survivors to talk about gun violence in the Latinx communities. The qualitative data will serve to enhance Latinx-specific programs at Everytown for Gun Safety to address the systemic inequities and generations of racial discrimination that have exacerbated this crisis in communities of color. 

Latinx Philanthropic Awards 

The HIPGiver Awards are a recognition reserved for the most innovative, visionary Latinx leaders who seek to create catalytic impact for Latinxs across the continent. The 2022 HIPGiver honorees included Hispanic Heritage Foundation President and CEO José Antonio Tijerino, President of the Board of Trustees of the Castellano Family Foundation Carmela Castellano, President of eMerge Americas and the Medina Family Foundation Melissa Medina, Emmy Award-winning journalist and Anchor at Univision Ilia Calderon, and membership-led organization of low-wage immigrant workers and families in South Florida, WeCount!
