Philanthropy: Defend Birthright Citizenship, Defend Our Future
The Supreme Court’s decision to chip away at birthright citizenship is a direct assault on the Constitution—and on our families.
At HIP, we are outraged by this dangerous attempt to deny U.S.-born children of immigrants their rightful citizenship. Let’s be clear: the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to all born on U.S. soil—no exceptions. This ruling isn’t just legally dubious—it’s morally abhorrent.
This recent Supreme Court decision injects fear into immigrant households, targets pregnant women, and sends a chilling message to our youth: your belonging is conditional.
But our belonging is not up for debate.
We stand with the parents, advocates, and legal defenders like our grantees, Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP), who are fighting back in every place where justice is demanded. We know that legal protections are only as strong as our collective will to defend them; now is the time for philanthropy to step up.
To our philanthropic peers:
- Fund legal defense strategies led by impacted communities.
- Invest in narrative infrastructure to combat fear with truth.
- Support organizing efforts that remind our children: you belong, and we will fight for you.
Birthright citizenship is not a loophole—it’s a cornerstone of our nation's identity. And we need to protect it.
