HIP’s Statement on Supreme Court’s Decision on DACA

Washington, D.C., June 18, 2020—Today, Ana Marie Argilagos, President and CEO of Hispanics in Philanthropy, issued the following statement responding to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to reinstate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:  “Today’s ruling is another example of how America is evolving and Americans are standing up against racial inequities and social injustice as we aim to live up to the best ideas of our country. “We applaud the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to reinstate the DACA program that has given protection to young people who lack permanent legal status. We stand with the more than 700,000 DACA recipients and their families because they are an integral part of our communities as sisters, brothers, friends, classmates, and coworkers. This victory couldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts and work of Dreamers and organizations and advocates like United We Dream, The Dream.US, Undocublack, FWD.us, AILA National, National Immigration Law Center, Make the Road, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, Community Change, NAKASEC, Firm Action, CASA, and so many more. “Since 2012, nearly a million DACA recipients have made countless contributions to our nation—they have completed their education; started businesses; become health care providers, teachers, attorneys, and members of the armed services. “During these unprecedented times, more than 200,000 DACA recipients are in the frontlines as essential workers growing and packing our food, and protecting the health and safety of all Americans. “We will work tirelessly to ensure that the power of the growing Latino community is not restricted by fear, xenophobia, or ignorance. HIP stands ready to work with our partners to ensure all families, regardless of their immigration status, stay together, and can live their lives without the fear that their families or lives will be ripped apart.“This movement for racial justice has been led by undocumented youth and the movement for Black lives. Together, they have built coalitions, struggled together, fought together, and learned and supported each other. This intersectional coalition has been building together for years and it is no accident that this decision and the country’s uprising are happening in tandem. We will continue to build with and support this movement for racial equality because everyone, regardless of DACA or immigration status is here to stay. This was the right decision and at the right time. Our country will be stronger for it. But our work continues and now is the time for Congress and the Trump administration to uphold the demands of the American people by providing a permanent solution for Dreamers and their families.”
