Regional Gathering on Climate and Migration Justice in Tela, Honduras

From November 14 to 17, 2023, the Regional Gathering on Climate and Migration Justice was held in Tela, Honduras. This event was co-organized by the American Friends Service Committee, ERIC - Radio Progreso, El Derecho a No Obedecer, the advocacy platform of Corporación Otraparte, Ayuda en Acción, and Hispanics in Philanthropy. It brought together civil society organizations, community leaders, and activists from 10 countries, from Mexico and Honduras to Guatemala, Colombia, and Brazil. The meeting aimed to gather participants to work towards building a more equitable future for Mesoamerican communities.

The Regional Meeting on Climate and Migration Justice: Closing Gaps and Opening Bridges for Articulation provided a space for reflection and dialogue among civil society actors (civil and community-based organizations, alternative media, funding agencies, and organized communities) to strengthen systemic analysis of climate change, migration, and forced displacement. The goal was to promote connections between the climate justice and migration justice movements regionally.

The objective of this meeting was to conduct a critical analysis—encouraging the exchange of experiences—with key organizations from Mesoamerica on the issues of migration and climate change.

As a result, the organizations produced a declaration document to continue building a joint agenda aimed at strengthening alliances to respond to the crises and protect the rights of communities affected by the intersection of both issues.

This is a peaceful call to come together as a community to close gaps and build bridges of resistance in response to the lack of immediate solutions to the climate change and forced displacement challenges currently faced by communities in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In 2024, through the digital platforms of HIP and co-organizing partners, we will be premiering a short documentary about the impact of the climate crisis and its consequences for local communities in the region. The consequences of these challenges have forced entire families to move to other areas within their countries or even to other countries, leaving behind everything they know as home.
