Solidarity for Cuban and Haitian Communities
Oakland, CA — In response to the most recent expressions of the people of Cuba and Haiti and their respective diaspora communities across the United States and Latin America, Hispanics in Philanthropy shared the following statement.
“Today and every day, we stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in Cuba and Haiti. While we must be careful and mindful of the information that is being disseminated in both scenarios, we know these principles will always remain the same, regardless of where the call for justice is being summoned.
“As philanthropic leaders, it is our responsibility to support and amplify the voices and the needs of those who are risking it all to be seen, heard and who are calling for dignity and justice.
“We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: our communities are not monolithic. Cubans are not monolithic and neither is the Haitian community. There are various opinions, lived experiences, and perspectives that should be taken into account and we must listen without judgment or gaslighting with our own political ideologies, the same ideologies that tend to be rooted in white supremacist, U.S.-centered/dominant, and colonialist narratives.
“On Cuba, we encourage you all to check out the work of one of our Grantees, WOLA in their latest statement on Cuba. We will continue to monitor this situation in the region to determine how we can best support, in the meantime, we send light, love, courage, and strength to the brave leaders yearning for justice.”

Hispanics in Philanthropy Expresa Solidaridad con la Comunidades Cubanas and Haitianas
Oakland, CA — En respuesta a las expresiones más recientes del pueblo de Cuba y Haití y sus respectivas comunidades de la diáspora en los Estados Unidos y América Latina, Hispanics in Philanthropy compartió la siguiente declaración.
“Hoy y todos los días, nos solidarizamos con nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cuba y Haití. Aunque debemos ser cuidadosos y conscientes de la información que se difunde en ambos escenarios, sabemos que los principios siempre serán los mismos, independientemente de dónde se convoca el llamado a la justicia.
“Como líderes filantrópicos, es nuestra responsabilidad amplificar las voces y las necesidades de aquellos que están arriesgando todo para ser vistos, escuchados y que piden dignidad y justicia.
“Lo hemos dicho antes y lo diremos de nuevo: nuestras comunidades no son monolíticas. Los cubanos no son monolíticos y tampoco lo es la comunidad haitiana. Hay varias opiniones, experiencias vividas y perspectivas que deben ser tomadas en cuenta, y debemos escuchar sin juzgar ni criticar con nuestras propias ideologías políticas, las mismas ideologías que tienden a tener sus raíces en la supremacía blanca, centrada/dominante en EE. UU. y las narrativas colonialistas.
“Sobre Cuba, los alentamos a que revisen el trabajo de uno de nuestros beneficiarios, WOLA, en su última declaración sobre Cuba. Continuaremos monitoreando esta situación en la región para determinar cómo podemos apoyar mejor, mientras tanto, enviamos luz, amor, y fuerza a los valientes líderes que piden justicia.”
