Family Unity Fund Receives $2M in Support from W.K. Kellogg Foundation
Hispanics in Philanthropy’s Family Unity Fund Aims to Grant $3M in its Second Phase of Grants for Family Reunification and Wellbeing
Oakland, CA — Today, Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) celebrates the generous support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) that committed $2 million towards HIP’s $3 million goal to support over 45 grantee partners of the Family Unity Fund. This fund forms part of a core strategy to support high-impact organizations in the U.S. specializing in family reunifications, social and legal services, and advocacy. HIP will offer programmatic support to its partners on donor engagement, capacity building, communications, and anti-racist and healing work.
“This injects resources for much-needed holistic support for children and families reuniting and healing from traumas derived during their migration, detention, and family separation,” shared Ana Marie Argilagos, President and CEO of Hispanics in Philanthropy. Our partners have been leading in providing key case management and safety net services as well as advocacy to ensure migrants can overcome long-term trauma and other negative impacts of a broken immigration system.
The first phase of the Family Unity Fund was created in response to the forcible separation of migrant families due to the impact of the Zero Tolerance policy implemented from April 2018 to January 2020 by the Trump Administration. It provided over $1 million, from the WKKF and others, of immediate relief for 43 frontline grassroots and transnational organizations in the U.S.-Mexico border and in key destination cities in the U.S. HIP’s partners included an ecosystem of Latinx-led organizations that offer services including psychological and trauma-informed care, legal and social support, advocacy, and post-release support for migrant families and their children.
This second phase will serve to deepen HIP’s commitment to move critical resources for organizations working with immigrant families striving to survive, reunite, and rebuild while recovering from systemic barriers and deep-seated traumas. The Fund will resource organizations responding to the impact of policies like Title 42 that continues to block, expel and separate migrant families, many of whom are escaping prosecution, violence, climate, and economic devastation across the Americas.
