Oakland, CA— On the heels of a potential government shutdown Ana Marie Argilagos, president of Hispanics in Philanthropy, issued the following statement in support of the 800,000 young people who find themselves in the middle of a political nightmare. These young people are DACA recipients, also known as DREAMers, and for whom the United States is the only home they have ever known:
“Hispanics in Philanthropy joins the millions of voices calling on the Senate to protect DREAMERers, and to act on bipartisan legislation immediately. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has allowed 800,000 DREAMers the basic opportunity to work and study without the threat of deportation.
“The reality is, that every day Congress fails to act on DACA, approximately 122 young people will lose their protection and their sense of safety.
“It is time that Congress come together and stop using young peoples’ future as a bargaining chip. Stop threatening a government shutdown and stop putting the lives of thousands of DREAMers and their families at risk. We urge you, Member of Congress, to work together and find an immediate solution.”
