Hispanics in Philanthropy Responds to the Mass Shooting in El Paso, Texas
August 3, 2019— We are in shock with the news of the heinous shooting that took place in El Paso earlier today. This week, Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) led a three-day delegation visit to learn from local officials, migrant-serving organizations, and migrant processing centers in El Paso, TX, Sunland Park, NM, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
We have been in touch with our local delegation partner—YWCA El Paso del Norte and the people we met earlier this week are safe.
Let us not forget that El Paso is a predominantly Latino community that has been ranked as one of the safest cities in the country under the leadership of Rep. Veronica Escobar (TX-16), Mayor Dee Margo, and other elected officials who we met earlier this week.
Now, El Paso is at the epicenter of human grief. Make no mistake about it: this is the new American reality—fear at all levels; people mistrusting each other; people seeing the danger in the faces around them instead of compassion. This toxic rhetoric and the unleashing of hate are impacting all communities, all races, all ethnicities, and all ages.
This is the time for philanthropy to be more vigilant and more active than ever.
