“Luz de Las Libres” Documentary

"Las Libres vamos a estar siempre hasta que todas las mujeres sean libres."

(Las Libres will be here until all women are free)

In the fight against gender violence, each story of resistance illuminates the way forward.

From Ciudad de México to the streets of Guanajuato, HIP’s new documentary "Luz de Las Libres" captures an inspiring truth: when women rise up against violence, communities transform. This remarkable film follows Luz, whose journey from survivor to changemaker reflects the determination of collective resistance and healing that defines the gender justice movement in Latin America.

Under Viviana Zuñiga's masterful direction, this documentary shows that despite the sobering statistics of gender-based violence across the Americas, hope and resilience are fueling an intergenerational movement of women to act. Every day across Mexico, women rise up against violence, showing us that transformation isn't just possible – it's already happening.

Organizations like Las Libres create the space for many to have feminist awakenings. "It felt like a veil had been lifted from my eyes, and I discovered their work. I said to myself: I want this path, I want to head in this direction," shared Luz María Pérez Ríos. This moment of clarity often marks the beginning of a journey toward liberation. And the ripple effects of this awakening are profound. As one of the women shared, "When a woman knows her rights, when she escapes situations of violence, she will inevitably radiate that impact to her family and those around her."

This powerful collaboration, created through the Skoll Foundation's Solutions Storytelling Project and Video Consortium, proves what Las Libres has always known: "If what we did changed the life of a woman, a girl, or a teenager, then it has been worth it." Every life transformed ripples outward, creating waves of change across generations.

Las Libres has become a movement that places power directly into women's hands. "Las Libres don’t have to do everything directly; what matters most is that the work is in the hands of women." From challenging internalized guilt to achieving economic independence, each story illuminates the path forward. Through Hispanics in Philanthropy's Gender, Race & Power program, we're proud to amplify this approach to community-led transformation.
