HIP Statement On U.S. Supreme Court Decision On Abortion

Oakland, CA – On Friday, June 24th the United States Supreme Court announced their decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization in a ruling to regulate abortion at the federal level. In response, Hispanics in Philanthropy shared the following statement.

“Today’s decision confirms the devastating news we learned of just a month ago. The impact of federal-level restrictions on abortions is a palpable attack on the vision for a just future where everyone has the right to a healthy, prosperous life.

“Women and pregnant people, especially people of color, already face barriers to access to reproductive healthcare. This historic decision forms part of the continued systemic deprivation of our rights which will continue to deeply impact Latinas/xs and their families. As Sister Song has defined, HIP believes it is our human right to personal bodily autonomy, to decide if and when to have children, and when we choose to have children to raise them in a safe and sustainable community.

“Rather than resign our efforts for a just world, this is the time to strengthen our commitments to grassroots movements that protect and provide for our communities. Our responsibility lies in how we show up for all who seek abortion care in the U.S., and for all historically under-resourced communities that will be impacted.

“From advocacy to strategic funding to support health equity there are many ways we can all step up to show our support. Let’s look to our global familia, for example, the grassroots movements across Latin America that have already led the expansion of reproductive rights in their countries. As the largest Latinx transnational philanthropic strengthening organization, HIP will continue to build, fund, and fuel this work for BIPOC for communities, most recently joining over 80 philanthropy groups to increase funding at the local and state level to increase abortion access.”
